Well, actually I was born in a log cabin... oh that was Abe Lincoln. I get confused sometimes. For real, I'm a native of Flushing. I'm also an American so that must make me a Native American?! Hey, that can't be right or can it?

My family has lived on several continents and met important people in history. Did you know that there were almost 4 ships that came to America? There were the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. Did you ever hear about the Gelber ship that set sail with Columbus? Well, we set sail on the same day as Christopher in 1492 but we got lost. Never leave home without a compass! A compass helps you to find your way. The Gelbers got lost and wound up landing in the Ukraine.The winters there are really cold! We lived there for over 400 years until my grandfather,Gershon Gelber, left for New York in 1904. That was 100 years ago!
Just imagine...if the Gelbers had come to America with Columbus, we might be celebrating Gelber Day today instead of Columbus Day.

I can speak several languages, none of them fluent, except English. I can dazzle my students in a mish-mash of Spanish, French, Yiddish, and Hebrew. One or two words in Russian or Chinese makes me multi-lingual. Mi clase es su clase...
